Me and my kinky hair Aug 3, 2011 8:26 AM I have been natural for almost two years now. It has been an emotional and challenging time.  No it is not motherhood or any real epic life event but it has been a major identity change.  Say what you will but as a woman your hair plays a real important role in how you look at yourself as far as attractiveness. I had been getting relaxers since I was around seven years of age and decided to give it up at twenty seven.  I never enjoyed the process of relaxing my hair or the lengthy salon visits.  I was even less thrilled about the dry itchy scalp issues. As for my hair itself, well I had a few incidents such as when I used a particular brand of perm and it shaved my head.  Well almost all of my head.  It took off most from the crown of my head back to about the nape of my neck and some from the left side of my head.  I remember screaming and jumping into the shower to wash out the rest of the perm as quickly as I could all the while watching my hair fall in clumps from my head.  It was strange, the hair just washed off as if I had used shaving cream.  The strands remained long and intact they just slid off my head. Luckily I te nd to have very thick hair and so I actually had to use two different jars of the same brand of relaxer to do my hair.  The bad relaxer had finished and I had to do the most of the front except the left side with a new jar of relaxer.  And so it was this area of my head that was spared the damage.  Another lucky point for me was that my hair tends to grow down unto my neck.  All my life my brother wanted me to shave them off since they were so out of place.  He thought they looked weird because the rest of "Good Hair" - 2009 Sundance Screening my hair grew in perfect as if I shaved my hairline into shape.  I actually had no baby hairs in the front at all.  But It was a good thing I never took his advice for it were these hairs growing down my neck that allowed for the beautician to be able to plait around my border so that she could do a stocking weave.  My emergency weave.   Anyway, that must have been the worst experience I had with a relaxer.  I actually started relaxing again as soon as my hair had a few inches of re-growth.  You probably want to know why I would go back to relaxers after such a traumatic experience.  Well, it was all I knew.  As I said before my hair was being relaxed from the age of seven.  As black women many of us get a relaxer as a given.  It is not strange to us.  It is what is done.  Once you get to a certain age it is seen as normal to have your hair relaxed.  It is to us the same as a boy getting a haircut.  It is a norm. It was not until several years after that experience that I just decided to go natural.  I was told that my hair was hard all my life.  I was also told that only coolie haired people can go natural not nappy course haired people.  Well, I did not care.  I just wanted something new and I was tired of having to pray through the entire relaxing process every time I went to a salon.  So, I bought a human hair wig and flipped my relaxer the bird.

tlsgirl Honey Facial Mask for Acne & Scarring Jan 4, 2010 4:12 PM I just started using this mask a few weeks ago and I'm a believer already.  I have crazy sensitive skin, acne, and some vicious scarring, and already the scars are fading and my breakouts are diminishing.  It's like a minor miracle, or a major one if you're obsessed with your skin like me.  I was the biggest skeptic ever, but it hasn't irritated my cranky skin a bit. Recipe: 1 TBSP honey - I used regular honey, nothing fancy 1 tsp ground nutmeg - I used whole nutmeg and then grated it myself 1 tsp ground cinnamon   Mix the above together until they form a chocolatey-colored paste, adjusting as you go until you get the consistency you like.  Let sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse off, using the nutmeg crumblies as a natural exfoliant.  Just don't wear a cute shirt while you're doing this, since it'll drip.
blondeyy Wake up with beautiful cascading curls! VERY easy and time saving! Sep 3, 2009 5:00 AM Wake up with gorgeous curls!  Seriously, fast and easy!  Spend the morning making a nice cup of tea and watching CNN rather than WORKING on your hair.  Wash your hair at night.  Put your favorite styling cream in damp hair.  Flip your head over (bending at the waist) and pull all hair into a scrunchie on the TOP of your head, secure.  Section by section, roll hair into curlers and pin.  ( I have very long hair and I only need about 6-7 curlers).   Everything stays on the top of your head so you don't feel a thing when you are sleeping.  And, you have to use a scrunchie rather than a rubber band so as not to have a dent in your hair in the a.m.  In the morning 'magic'!  Remove the curlers and scrunchie - either brush hair or finger tousle and your done!  Beautiful hair!  I read this somewhere and do it all the time - it is a REAL time saver with FAB results!
