Beauty is about more than just what you look like on the outside. Sometimes, you need a little help in order to relax and wind down after a hard day. Well, what better way to give yourself some much needed down time than a DIY facial and a homemade candle?
Oh, and did I mention that it's inexpensive too?
I know, I know. It can't be! And yet, here's an easy way to make a pretty and deliciously scented candle - for yourself or as a gift for others. I've hung on to a few of these and given dozens away as gifts, always to a smile and a sniff. And add a little relaxation for yourself with a Fruit Bowl Facial. You'll thank yourself!
Fruit Bowl Facial
¼ cup finely ground oatmeal
¼ cup finely ground almonds
¾ cup soft fruits or vegetables of your choice, chopped and mashed (strawberries, raspberries, apricots, peaches, plums, blueberries, cucumber, lettuce or tomatoes)
Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl and stir well. Add the fruits/veggies and combine until the mixture is well blended. Stir in just enough water to form a soft paste. Spread on the face and massage in. Let sit for 10 – 15 minutes, rinse well with warm water, pat dry, and moisturize.

(All materials available in local craft stores)
Wicks - I recommend buying individual wicks with metal bases
Soy Wax
Candle Fragrance - I usually go vanilla. Always a favorite.
Candle Dyes - if you want to. You can also break down old candles and toss them into the mix on these too for a little extra color. I've done this with old Yankee candle tea lights.
Jars - A great idea is to use empty (and washed, obviously) baby food jars, artichoke jars, or old candle jars. Whatever is handy really. I've used the artichoke jars for candles and they work great. (Example below.) You can always use labels or ribbons in order to mask old labels, so don't worry about that, but do make sure everything is heat safe.
Place a few spoonfuls of wax, a few drops of fragrance, and a few drops of dye (if used) into a microwave safe jar. Heat until it's a puddle in the middle, absolutely liquified. Feel free to add in more wax at any time to build up the candle.
Whatever you do, don't touch it with your bare hands, even the jar! Ouch!
Take jar out of the microwave and place the wick in carefully. It'll probably start to tilt to one side, so this is my little trick I'm sharing with you: Take the wick into a pair of scissors and get a firm grasp on the wick as it's in the jar. Don't cut the wick! Just lay the scissors along the top until the candle solidifies. It should take about 2 hours or so, depending on the size of the candle.
Feel free to add decorative touches like ribbon or paint to the jar! Remember - presentation is everything.

Super cool! And I
the song!
1I love the idea, but I'd almost rather eat the fruit. I love candlemaking, though!
2OMG you have the best ideas! I love them!
3Candles look like a fab idea, WELL PLAYED!
4How cool is that
. I'm going to have to try this as soon as I get some free time.
Love the song too.
5OH i love the idea of making homemade candles! Awesome. What a great and inexpensive gift idea.
6I've been making homemade candles for a few years and I love the way that they turn out. And they're so easy! Plus, I love seeing the expression on people's faces when I tell them that I made it. (Apparently they don't consider me crafty or something.)
And as for the song - I couldn't help myself. Glad you all like it too!
7That facial sounds yummy. Can I eat the leftover mixutre?
Great song choice!
Style Before Comfort!
8Nothing that says you can't eat it!
9Once again, great tips!
10I would love to try and make my own candles, Lord knows I spend a fortune on buying candles. Is it really cheaper to make your own candle? I like strong smelling candles.
11I definitely think that making your own candles is cheaper. For maybe $10, I can get all the supplies and make says 10 candles at least from the artichoke jars. I use soy wax, which is more expensive, but there are cheaper waxes available too. As for strong smelling, there are fragrance drops and fragrance packs too, so you can make them really strong smelling too.
